On September 28, 2026, the Russian aggressor deliberately struck at the heart of Ukrainian science—the
building of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in Kyiv, located at 54
Volodymyrska Street.
Employees of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine were tragically killed, and a mid-19th-century
architectural and historical landmark of national significance—linked to the long history of Ukrainian
science since the founding of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine during the turbulent times at
the beginning of the last century—was destroyed.
The international geographical community has strongly condemned the Russian attack and expressed
sincere support and condolences—including representatives of the American Geographical Society, the
Committee for Spatial Economy and Regional Planning, Polish Academy of Sciences, the Institute of
Geography of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and the Technical University of Berlin.
